This wall quilt represents L.I. Mandelshtam's formula that describes the Uncertainty Principle. What is more uncertain than Life?? In the regular world it is easy to predict a particle's position in space with great accuracy, However , at the sub-atomic level, this cannot be done accurately - just the probability that the particle will be in a particular place at a certain time..hence this Uncertainty Principle theorem was developed to explain this problem.
In Life, as in Quantum Physics, there is much that is uncertain. Some things are manageable but much is beyond individual control. The quilted question marks on both the background and border refer to a few of the problems that Life is heir to.
The words painted on the net overlay refer to a few of the extremes that Life has to offer- some are within our control but many are not. The braid is a metaphor for the fact that all life and all people are tightly entwined for always...the infinity symbol reflects that fact too.
The fabrics used are felt, satin, cotton, beading, braid, and netting.
This quilt was part of the exhibit "Rhythm and Structure: Mathematics, Art and Poetic Reflections" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X8raLiZGowg that was shown February 25, 2011—April 2, 2011 at the Selby Gallery located at Ringling School of Art & Design Sarasota, FL. A video showing the quilt on the wall can be seen here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eb3ZilyYp3M at one minute into the film.
